Keep an eye on Tiffanys blog here at Frontón. She has agreed to keep us all updated on the professional Pelota Mano scene in the basque country. You'll find it under the section "blog" in the top meny or when the posts are new, in the main page.
In Sweden we are planning to introduce Jai Alai and all other varietys of basque pelota right now. We are just a small group of fans, and many of us go regurarely to Spain to play since we don't have any frontons here. Me myself I mainly play Mano.
I have tried to study both the cases of Spain and the US when planning on how to introduce the sport here, and I must say that I think none of them would really fit a new "market" like Sweden or any other western country.
A sport purely based on wagering as in the US would not stand a chance here. It is simply not a part of our society in the same way as in the basque country for example. We know that we need to pass our own passion for this wonderful sport on to other people in our nation, and in that way create an interest from below, with amateur players etc., because the sport itself is not a part of our culturural heritage as it is in the basque country.
We want to work as more of a normal sports club, where the game itself is in focus and people can try playing themselves and experience Jai Alai, and not as a horse racing track or a casino were you look at the players as objects that will generate money for you.
Theres not much passion. Many of the people who bet on it, consider themselves fans, but their not really, cause they wouldn't go see the game without betting. Their appreciation & dislikes of players are measures in cashed winning tickets. It seems the Frontons have given up collectively on the ressurrection of the game. There are some fans left though! In the US. Jai-Alai USA seems the most dedicated to the game itself without the betting. I am one of many old timers who continue to hang on to the game. This is why I return to Spain every year to see the game in its purest form. Paretido's!! If Mano can make such a huge surge, there is no reason that Jai-Alai cannot.
That strikes me as well when I google the big Jai Alai companies. A lot of poker and dog racing info, some Jai Alai rules, and that's it. Where is the passion for this great game that they run completely on your side of the Atlantic?
I see a lot of passion among the americans on this forum that I have gotten to know during the last days. Why not make an effort and together let that love for the game create the image of Jai Alai in America? I think all of us want to see Jai Alai strong in the US.
The Game needs a new beginning. The US cause is very bleak. Most Jai-Alai's have no passion about the greatness of the game. They are holding out to be able to obtain a casino liscence. This is for their survival, so its not malicious. However as a fan, the frontons themselves are in need of renovation, from the units to the fans. Its just not the place for a great game, all that is left is Gamblers. Spain is the only place to experience the game at its best. And even there, the game is losing steam. This is what Jai-Alai needs a new place, with new faces to run it. If you put the old guard in, you will end up with the same old result.
